Vegas Born to Vegas Mourn

It was a tough night to be a Vegas Golden Knights fan. For the first time, in our lifetimes, the VGK did not qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Since its inception via NHL expansion in 2017, Vegas has played in the league’s year-end tournament. In its first season reaching the Stanley Cup Finals, losing to the Washington Capitols in 5 games. Beset by injuries, the Vegas team lead by Mark Stone, Alex Pietrangelo, and newly-acquired Jack Eichel could manage no better than ninth place in the Western Conference, some 26 points off of the Colorado Avalanche’s pace.

Many fans point the blame at VGK management for its treatment of former netminder, Marc-Andre Fleury. Those from the outside feel that Vegas brass destroyed the team’s locker room by trading or releasing “chemistry” guys like Fleury, former defenseman Nate Schmidt and forward Ryan Reaves. Fans also point to management’s salary cap-busting spending on Evgenii Dadonov, Pietrangelo and goalie Robin Lehner.

Are Vegas fans spoiled? The short answer: Yup. Entitled VGK fans have enjoyed a team that has always won. A team that spends every penny possible to continue winning. The minute, there’s a bump in the road, like missing the playoffs and many so-called fans act like the age of the team…five…and throw a social media tantrum.

For some perspective with just a touch of sarcasm, here’s an embarrassing version of Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind” to lament VGK’s 2021-22 season.

LYRICS:

Goodbye playoff dreams
No one knew how quickly we’d fall
Nearly had the cup for ourselves
Now, we won’t play for it at all

So, then they got rid of Turk
Sent Schmitty on a northbound plane
Shipped off Flower against his will
and the Blackhawks took his name

For fans like us of the Golden Knights,
we’re just used to playoff wins
Now, I don’t know what I will do
until next season
I guess I could watch you know who
in Minnesota’s net
And know if he was still Vegas Born,
we’d win the cup, I bet

And I don’t want to be that guy, ya know
but 29 was missed
A playoff bid VGK could not score
but Marc-Andre Fleury did!
