Dude, if you grew up watching TV in the 70’s, you couldn’t help but know Andrew Squiggman, better known as Squiggy on “Laverne & Shirley.” You probably found yourself “Gettin’ Squiggy Wit It.” I produced this tribute, to David L. Lander’s most memorable character, more than 20 years ago. Well, maybe not “tribute.” It was more due to the success of one of 1998’s biggest hits by Will Smith.
Lander passed away on Friday night at age 73.
“Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It” spent three weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 in March of ’98. It was a huge hit that year. And as you can figure out, “Squiggy” and “jiggy” rhyme. That’s it. “Laverne & Shirley” was being played consistently on Nick at Nite, it was just that simple.
If I remember correctly, a producer from Nick at Nite contacted me after hearing about the parody. The cable network asked if they could use it for promos for “Laverne & Shirley.” Nothing ever came of it. I figured they couldn’t get clearance for the song.
The Los Angeles Times reported: “Lander passed away Friday evening at Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after having battled multiple sclerosis for 37 years. His wife, Kathy Fields Lander, daughter Natalie Lander and son-in-law Jared Hillman were by his side.”
Enjoy “Gettin’ Squiggy Wit It.”
